GREENFIELD, MA – Greenfield is taking numerous steps to make it a “Green Showcase community,” marrying its interests in economic development and the environment. “Revitalization of Downtown and Bank Row, the Wisdom Way Solar Village, and the soon to be constructed zero net energy transit station are putting Greenfield on the map,” says Mayor William Martin. “These efforts will improve our economy, our downtown, and the environment, and favorably position the Town to secure additional grants for future work”. |

Greenfield has an opportunity to address one of the largest users of fossil fuel Greenfield citizens utilize today. Heat. At the present time, this demand to stay warm requires a fuel to be burned to generate this heat. Even electric heat requires the original source of electricity to be generated by the burning of some form of fuel. Though nuclear energy does provide some of this generation, the predominate fuel used today to generate Greenfield’s heat is fossil fuel oil and or natural gas; both the largest contributors to the climate changing ingredients effecting our planet. Even if you do not consider fossil fuel emissions to be the most important climate changing ingredient, fossil fuel is undoubtedly the essence of all current major world wide military conflicts. The control of oil distribution, oil production and oil profits are the driving force behind all military conflicts today. And we, you and me, have an opportunity to start the process of ridding ourselves of this “satanic resource”, right here and now…in Greenfield. |

Cash For Clunkers. Is It A Good Idea? |

While it is difficult to unconditionally endorse this federal government Cash for Clunkers Rebate Program, here is information about trading in your old car if it gets less than 18mpg and getting a $3500 to $4500 credit on the purchase of a new car that gets at least 22 mpg. There's a lot that's wrong with this policy, like incentivizing the purchase of cars that only get 22 mpg and SUVs that only get 18mpg. I would encourage automobile owners considering this program to only trade in an old car if the new car you are going to purchase gets at least 35mpg. If the improvement you are considering is only 10 to 20% in terms of gas mileage, it does not justify in terms of greenhouse gas emissions the purchase of a new car. (10% of a car's greenhouse gas emissions are emitted in the manufacture of that car). |
