Views on Aging
Written by George Carlin
Sunday, 22 July 2007
Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

"How old are you?",  "I'm four and a  half!" You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the  key!!

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. "How old are you?"  "I'm gonna be 16!"  You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life ... you BECOME 21. Even the  words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 21.  YESSSS!!!

Mass burials have been held as tensions rise in northern Iraq [REUTERS]
The northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk has held mass funerals after a lorry and two car bombs killed up to 80 people.

Dozens of men carried the bodies of their relatives from morgues in lorries and taxis on Tuesday.

The burials came a day after a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle near the headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

Published: July 18, 2007

It had to happen. President Bush’s bungling of the war in Iraq has been the talk of the summer. On Capitol Hill, some of the more reliable Republicans are writing proposals to force Mr. Bush to change course. A showdown vote is looming in the Senate.

Enter, stage right, the fear of terrorism.

Gas Prices High? Something You Can Do
Written by Emily L.
Wednesday, 04 July 2007
Even as gas prices get more and more out of control, auto makers seem to think it's just temporary -- they keep building cars that are not fuel efficient and pretending that they are.

Thirty miles to the gallon is not fuel efficient! Tell the auto industry to take real action on the gas crisis>> Gas

The average household is going to shell out more than $3,200 this year on gas. An average fuel efficiency standard of 35 miles per gallon will save a typical family more than $500 annually.

Congress hasn't increased fuel efficiency standards since 1975, and after decades of inaction, it's time to get America moving with more fuel efficient vehicles. The debate is heating up in Congress and support for increasing fuel standards has a lot of momentum.

But the auto industry, big oil and their army of lobbyists have shifted into high gear to oppose new fuel efficiency standards that will save us money on gasoline and help dig us out of this hole.

Sign the petition today to tell the auto industry to stop standing in the way of fuel efficiency improvements!>>

Live Earth Pledge
Written by Becca King/Nancy Hazard
Tuesday, 03 July 2007

We strongly urge you to sign on to Live Earth Pledge and to follow through with all the steps (you’ll see what I mean after you sign up). This is not only a great opportunity for your voice to be heard. But it could be a great “tool” for the work we are all doing through the Greenfield Energy Committee!

On 7.7.07 more than two billion people will come together during Live Earth. That number is unfathomable - more than one-fourth of the world’s population will participate in a single event and demand a solution to the climate crisis. This unique moment presents us with a unique choice.

Searching for Balance
Written by Jessica Van Steensburg

It is no secret for readers of The Recorder who Chris Collins' favorite past contender for Town Council was. He is allowed to express his personal preferences and offer unfettered support without any counterbalance. It is striking to me that a person who comes from a reporting background can continue to submit pieces that are outrageously one-sided, not to mention unprofessional. What ever happened to reporter etiquette? Collins has said that the “Town Council race had hit a new low.” This is probably because the race didn’t yield the results he wanted. Had his chosen candidate won, would we be reading about how the “smear campaign” didn’t work?
