Full time Athletic Director/Trainer PDF Print E-mail
Written by Steve Lapore

Now that you have a new superintendent and a plan for the schools, you should consider a position that includes the following. An athletic director that also works as an athletic trainer and coordinates all fundraising for athletics. A full-time position that does the scheduling and budgeting for the athletic program, yet also teaches ALL students about injury prevention, fitness training and injury rehabilitation. This person would also bring all the booster clubs together to schedule events to bring funds into the system.

As a coach for girls soccer, I know my time needs to be spent coaching skills, improving team spirit, supporting individual athletes to be part of something bigger, and counseling players who may not succeed to their expectations. This AD position is extremely important, it would speak to every athlete and parent about how the GPSK12 is reaching out to the student-athlete. Now, more than ever our school system needs to have that message put into action. Create this position and fund it as a full-time position, so we can all work together and make the most of our athletic facilities and put all our sports into the top realm of performance.

This is a school choice issue, Student-athletes need support and need to know they have a "go-to" person for all issues regarding their success as an athlete and student. Our high school loses students because it is perceived we do not care for our older students, those preparing to pursue higher education or enter the work force full-time. This perception is real, it has made school choicing out a major issue, and this position would make a huge difference in changing that viewpoint. For $50,000 we could have a spokesperson that markets our athletic programs and creates community support that could possibly fund all our athletes and programs. This position is innovative and will show action when it is most needed.
