Home Depot Closes In Brattleboro
Written by JOHN CURRAN, Associated Press
Friday, 09 May 2008

Here’s an Associated Press story The Recorder somehow missed---even though it mentions Greenfield, and quotes a Greenfield resident. This story ran in the International Herald in Paris, but not in downtown Greenfield.  ---Sprawl-Busters News Service

Locals beat Home Depot.

Dumb as We Wanna Be
Written by THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
Thursday, 01 May 2008
It is great to see that we finally have some national unity on energy policy. Unfortunately, the unifying idea is so ridiculous, so unworthy of the people aspiring to lead our nation, it takes your breath away. Hillary Clinton has decided to line up with John McCain in pushing to suspend the federal excise tax on gasoline, 18.4 cents a gallon, for this summer’s travel season. This is not an energy policy. This is money laundering: we borrow money from China and ship it to Saudi Arabia and take a little cut for ourselves as it goes through our gas tanks. What a way to build our country.

DEAD LETTER DEPARTMENT
Written by Al Norman
Wednesday, 30 April 2008
The letter below was sent to the Greenfield Town Council. According to the Town Council Secretary, the President has referred it to the Chairs Committee, and from there it will go to another committee, etc. This means that consideration by the Town Council of giving the voters of Greenfield a chance to elect an At Large Councilor in November, instead of someone chosen by 11 people for a term that runs until June, 2009, will not be taken up until the June Town Council meeting at the earliest. The General Court, which is likely to adjourn for the summer in early July, would have little opportunity to give Greenfield approval to put this seat on the November ballot already scheduled. After three weeks, there has been no reply to this letter, a copy of which was emailed to The Recorder, which dropped this subject quicker than you can say “cronyism.”

The Question of Sick Leave Buy Back
Written by Pam Kinsmith
Tuesday, 29 April 2008

This evening the Ways and Means Committee met with time allocated for open budget discussions with Superintendent Evans, School Committee Chair Greg Aubin and Mayor Forgey in attendance as well as members of the community.  A wide spectrum of issues were presented and discussed. I will be sharing the many questions the community has sent my way to pursue as well as facts I receive on each issue.

Councilor Martin questions many issues related to teacher contracts at most meetings I have attended. This evening the discussion of sick leave buyback left out some key facts currently in the teacher's contract and relevant to the discussion.
